How Little Jingles Can Make Everyday Routines Easier for Kids

Kindy teachers do it, music therapists do it and sometimes even school teachers do this to make their lives easier...
SINGING INSTRUCTIONS instead of SPEAKING THEM!
Playful jingles can make daily routines smoother and more enjoyable for children. As a registered music therapist I use tiny tunes all the time to support things like brushing teeth, packing away, hand washing or moving from one activity to another. Here is why they work so well.
Music helps instructions stick: When instructions are paired with a melody, the brain encodes the information more strongly than speech alone. A simple tune makes it easier for children to remember what to do and in what order.
A jingle captures attention: A clear rhythm and predictable melody cut through the noise of the moment. This helps children shift their attention and get ready for the next step with less prompting from adults.
Music creates positive feelings: Children naturally respond to music with curiosity and enjoyment. When a happy familiar jingle plays at the start of a routine it builds a positive association and can reduce resistance or anxiety.
Tiny tunes support independence: Over time the jingle itself becomes the cue for the routine. Instead of repeated verbal reminders the child begins to move through the steps more confidently on their own.
HOW TO DO IT?
The easiest way to get started is to pick a nursery rhyme you know well and change the words. Keep it simple and direct. Repeat it daily for the particular routine. The child may need to hear it a few times before they catch up and some kids need the song sang 3-4 times before they actually begin the specific routine.
At work, I sing a pack away and goodbye song to ease my clients out of the room (transitions are tricky)
